Prologue: The Email

The message arrived at 2:47 AM on a Tuesday, when the world was quiet, and my inhibitions were not.

Professor Daniel,

I know it's been three years. I know I shouldn't write this. But I'm standing at my window watching the snow fall in Boston, and all I can think about is that summer in your study. The way the dust motes danced in the afternoon light while your hands danced across my skin. The way you tried so hard to be good, Daniel. The way you failed.

I'm 22 now. Not the girl you tutored. Not the virgin who trembled when you touched her hand. I've had lovers—boys who fumbled and men who knew their way around a woman's body. None of them compare to what we almost had. What we did have, in fragments, in stolen moments, in the spaces between right and wrong.

I want to see you again. I want to finish what we started. I want you to teach me the things you were too afraid to teach me then.

If you tell me to disappear, I will. But if you still think about me—about the taste of my mouth, the weight of my breasts in your hands, the sound I made when you first slid your fingers inside me—then meet me. Same place. One week from today.

No one needs to know. No one ever did.

—Lily

I read the email seventeen times. I poured two fingers of scotch and drank them without tasting. I deleted the message, then recovered it from the trash. I sat in the dark of my Cambridge study—the same study where it had all begun—and remembered.

God, how I remembered.

Part One: The Arrangement

The summer Lily Chen came to live with me, I was forty-six years old, widowed for eight years, and convinced that the best parts of my life were behind me. Claire had died of ovarian cancer at thirty-nine, taking with her not just our future but my belief that I deserved happiness. I taught my classes at Harvard, published my papers on Renaissance literature, and came home to a house that felt increasingly like a museum of my former life.

Then my colleague David Chen called from Berkeley.

"Daniel, I need a favor. A massive favor. The kind that could save my daughter's life, or at least her future."

David and I had been graduate students together at Yale, had survived the brutal job market of the nineties, had watched each other marry and, in my case, bury. He was one of the few people I still considered a true friend.

"What's wrong?"

"It's Lily. She's—she's brilliant, Daniel. You know she started Berkeley at sixteen? She's nineteen now, finishing her junior year, and she's been accepted to Harvard for her master's. Medieval literature, just like her old man. Just like you."

"That's wonderful, David."

"It's a disaster." He sighed, and I heard the exhaustion in his voice. "Her mother and I are divorcing. It's—it's ugly, Daniel. Lawyers, accusations, the whole nightmare. Lily can't stay here. She's caught in the crossfire, and she's... retreating into herself. Stopped eating for a while. Stopped sleeping. She needs to get out, but she can't afford Cambridge on her own, and I can't support two households and grad school."

I saw where this was going. "You want her to stay with me."

"Just for the summer. Just until she can get settled, find her own place. She's quiet, Daniel. Polite. She won't be any trouble. She just needs—" He paused, and his voice cracked. "She needs someone steady. Someone who isn't tearing her world apart."

I should have said no. Every instinct I had, every voice of reason, told me that a forty-six-year-old widower had no business living with a nineteen-year-old girl, even if she was the daughter of my oldest friend. But David was desperate, and I was lonely in ways I hadn't admitted to myself, and the truth was that my house felt like a tomb. The idea of life—of youth, of energy, of someone else breathing in these rooms—was intoxicating.

"Send her," I said. "I'll take care of her."

I had no idea what I was agreeing to.

Lily arrived on a humid June afternoon, stepping out of the rideshare with a single duffel bag and a backpack that looked heavy with books. I had expected a child—some gangly teenager with braces and awkwardness. What I found waiting on my doorstep was a woman.

She was small, barely five-foot-two, with the compact build of a gymnast or a dancer. Her black hair fell past her shoulders in a glossy curtain, and her eyes—her mother's eyes, I remembered—were an unusual amber-brown that caught the sunlight like honey. She wore a simple white sundress that showed off golden-brown skin and collarbones that looked carved from porcelain.

"Professor Hartley," she said, and her voice was lower than I expected, smoky and soft. "Thank you for taking me in."

"Daniel," I corrected, taking her bag. "Please. We're going to be living together for three months. Professor Hartley makes me sound ancient."

She smiled, and it transformed her face—suddenly she wasn't a serious young woman but a girl with dimples and mischief in her eyes. "You don't look ancient. You look—" She tilted her head, studying me with unsettling directness. "Tired. But not ancient."

I laughed, surprised. "Well. Come in, Lily. Welcome to your temporary home."

I showed her the guest room on the second floor, across the hall from my own bedroom. It had been Claire's office, and I'd barely touched it since her death. Now, watching Lily set down her bag and look around with those wide amber eyes, I felt a strange tightening in my chest.

"This was your wife's room," she said. It wasn't a question.

"How did you know?"

She touched the window seat, where Claire had kept her reading cushion. "It feels like her. Like love, but sad love. Residual love." She turned to me, and her expression was too knowing for her years. "You haven't let anyone in here, have you?"

"No."

"I'm sorry." She stepped closer, and I caught the scent of her—jasmine and something warmer, like vanilla. "For your loss. My father told me. He said you were married for twelve years."

"Fourteen."

"That's a long time to love someone."

"It's a long time to miss them."

Her eyes softened, and she reached out—hesitated—and then touched my arm, just above the elbow. Her fingers were cool and light. "I'll try not to disturb her ghost too much."

She didn't disturb Claire's ghost. She disturbed me.

Part Two: The Study

Lily settled into my house with the ease of water finding its level. She was quiet, as David had promised, but not in a withdrawn way. She was observant. She noticed things—the way I took my coffee (black, two sugars), the hours I kept (up at six, in bed by eleven), the fact that I still set a place for Claire at dinner out of habit.

"You don't have to do that," she said one evening, two weeks into her stay. We were eating pasta carbonara at the kitchen table, and I'd automatically set three plates.

"Do what?"

"Keep her alive in the rituals." Lily twirled her fork, not meeting my eyes. "My parents are doing that. Keeping up appearances. Family dinners where no one speaks. Sleeping in separate bedrooms but pretending for the neighbors. It's—it's exhausting, watching people perform grief instead of feeling it."

I set down my wine glass. "Is that what you think I'm doing? Performing?"

"No." She finally looked up, and her eyes were bright with unshed tears. "I think you're stuck. I think you loved her so much that you don't know how to want anything else. Anyone else." She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, embarrassed. "Sorry. That was presumptuous."

"It was honest." I reached across the table and took her hand before I could think better of it. Her skin was warm now, warmed by the candlelight and the wine. "Tell me about the not-sleeping. Your father mentioned it."

She didn't pull away. "Nightmares. About the divorce, mostly. About being pulled apart." Her thumb moved against my palm, almost absently, tracing the lines there. "I wake up at 3 AM and I can't go back to sleep. I usually read until dawn."

"You could wake me. If you need company."

"Could I?" Her voice dropped, became intimate. "Would you let me into your room at 3 AM, Daniel? Would you let me climb into your bed and tell you about my nightmares?"

My hand tightened on hers. The air in the kitchen had gone thick, charged with something I didn't want to name. "Lily—"

"I know." She pulled back, smiled brightly, falsely. "Inappropriate. I'm sorry. I have a habit of saying exactly what I'm thinking. It makes people uncomfortable."

"It makes me—" I stopped, unsure how to finish.

"What?" She leaned forward, and her sundress gaped slightly at the neckline, showing the upper curve of her breasts. She wore no bra—I could see the shape of her nipples against the thin cotton. "What does it make you, Daniel?"

"Aware," I said quietly. "Of things I shouldn't be aware of."

She held my gaze for a long moment, then stood and began clearing the plates. Her hands were shaking. "I'll do better. I promise. You're being so kind to me. I don't want to make you regret it."

I already did. And I already didn't.

The incident in my study happened three days later.

It was a Saturday, and I'd been grading papers in my home office—a book-lined room with a fireplace and a leather sofa where I sometimes napped. Lily had gone out with a friend from her new summer job at the library, and I'd settled in for a long afternoon of work.

I must have fallen asleep. When I woke, the afternoon light had shifted to gold, and Lily was standing in the doorway.

"You're drooling," she said, amused.

I wiped my mouth, embarrassed. "How long have you been there?"

"Long enough to watch you sleep. You look younger when you're asleep. Less—" She searched for the word. "Guarded."

I sat up, running a hand through my hair. "What time is it?"

"Almost six. I brought you coffee." She stepped into the room, holding two mugs. She'd changed into shorts and a tank top, and her legs were bare, golden, toned. "I didn't know how you take it, so I brought black and with cream."

"Black." I took the mug, and our fingers brushed. "Thank you."

She settled onto the sofa beside me, tucking her legs beneath her. The tank top rode up, showing a strip of her stomach—flat, with the hint of muscle definition, and a small silver ring in her navel that I hadn't noticed before.

"You're staring," she said, not looking at me.

"You're revealing."

She laughed, a low sound that vibrated in my chest. "It's hot outside. And it's not like I'm naked."

"No. But you're—" I stopped, took a sip of coffee to buy time. "You're very beautiful, Lily. You must know that."

"I know that men look at me." She turned to face me, drawing one knee up onto the cushion. The movement pulled her shorts tight across her hips, showing the outline of her underwear. "I know that my thesis advisor at Berkeley asked me to dinner three times. I know that the cashier at the grocery store tries to touch my hand when he gives me change. I know that you watch me when you think I'm not looking."

My throat went dry. "Lily—"

"Do you want to know what I think about when I touch myself?"

The mug froze halfway to my lips. "What?"

She wasn't blushing. Her face was calm, serious, that unsettling directness fixed on me. "I think about you. In this room. Sitting in that chair while I kneel in front of you. I think about your hands in my hair, guiding me. Teaching me." She set down her coffee and moved closer, close enough that I could smell the jasmine on her skin, close enough that her knee pressed against my thigh. "I think about you losing control. About the moment when Professor Hartley stops being proper and starts being—"

"Stop." I set my coffee down with a hand that trembled. "Lily, you need to stop."

"Why?"

"Because I'm forty-six years old and you're—"

"Twenty-two. I'm twenty-two, Daniel. Not a child. Not your student. Just a woman who wants you." She reached out and touched my face, her fingers tracing my jawline. "I see the way you look at me. I feel it. This—" She pressed her palm against my chest, over my heart. "This is beating fast. For me."

I should have stood up. Should have left the room, called her father, packed her bags myself. Instead, I sat frozen as she leaned in, as her lips brushed my cheek, my jaw, the corner of my mouth.

"Tell me to stop," she whispered against my lips. "Tell me to stop, and I will."

I didn't tell her to stop.

I kissed her.

It was like a dam breaking. One moment I was a man of restraint, of propriety, of grief-honed self-control. The next I was devouring her mouth, my hands in her hair, pulling her onto my lap. She gasped against my lips and then melted into me, her body soft and yielding, her mouth opening under mine with eager inexperience that somehow made it hotter.

"Daniel," she breathed, and the sound of my name in her mouth was obscene and sacred. "Oh god, yes."

I kissed her throat, the hollow of her collarbone, the slope of her shoulder. She arched against me, and I felt her breasts press against my chest, the hardness of her nipples through the thin fabric. My hands moved without my permission, tracing her waist, her hips, sliding up under her tank top to touch the bare skin of her back.

"Touch me," she whispered. "Please, Daniel. I've wanted this for so long."

I should have asked how long. Should have questioned the ethics, the power dynamics, the betrayal of my friend's trust. Instead, I pulled her tank top over her head and looked at her—really looked at her—for the first time.

She was exquisite. Small, high breasts with dark nipples that tightened under my gaze. A slender waist that flared into womanly hips. Skin like honeyed silk. And her face—her face was flushed, her lips swollen from my kisses, her eyes dark with desire.

"You're perfect," I said, and my voice was rough, unrecognizable.

"Show me," she said. "Show me what you like. Teach me."

I laid her back on the leather sofa and worshipped her with my mouth. I kissed every inch of her torso, circled her navel with my tongue, traced the waistband of her shorts with my teeth. When I finally took her nipple into my mouth, she cried out and arched off the cushions, her hands tangling in my hair.

"Yes," she gasped. "Oh god, yes. More."

I switched to the other breast, sucking harder, using my teeth gently. She was writhing beneath me, making sounds I'd never heard from Claire—raw, desperate, uninhibited. When I slid my hand down her shorts and found her wetness, she sobbed my name.

"Daniel—oh god—I've never—no one's ever—"

I stilled. "Never?"

"Only myself. Only my fingers." She looked up at me, her eyes glazed. "I want you to be the first. The first to touch me like this. The first to make me—"

I kissed her then, deeply, as my fingers explored her. She was soaked, her folds slippery and hot, her clit a hard pearl beneath my thumb. I stroked her gently at first, learning her rhythm, watching her face for what made her gasp, what made her moan.

"More," she begged. "Inside. Please."

I slid one finger into her tight heat, and she clamped around me, her body going rigid. She was so tight, so hot, so responsive. I added a second finger, curling them to find the spot that made her cry out, her hips bucking against my hand.

"Like that?" I asked, my voice dark with satisfaction.

"Yes—yes—don't stop—"

I didn't stop. I worked her with my fingers, my thumb circling her clit, my mouth at her breast. She was climbing fast, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her hands clawing at my shoulders.

"Daniel—I'm going to—oh god—"

"Let go," I commanded. "Come for me, Lily. Let me feel you."

She shattered. Her body convulsed, her back arching off the sofa, her internal muscles clamping down on my fingers in rhythmic spasms. She cried out my name, then again, then dissolved into wordless sounds of pleasure that went on and on.

When she finally stilled, she was limp, her skin sheened with sweat, her eyes half-closed. I withdrew my fingers slowly, and she whimpered at the loss.

"That was—" She laughed, breathless. "That was incredible. I didn't know—I mean, when I do it myself, it's not like that."

I kissed her forehead, her nose, her lips. "There's more. So much more."

"I want it all." She reached for my belt, her fingers clumsy with eagerness. "I want to make you feel like that. I want to taste you."

I caught her hands. "Lily—we need to slow down. This is—this is complicated. Your father—"

"Is divorcing my mother and doesn't get to dictate my choices." She sat up, suddenly fierce. "I'm not a child, Daniel. I know what I want. I've wanted you since I was sixteen years old and you visited Berkeley and read poetry in our living room. I've fantasized about you for six years. Don't tell me this is wrong because of some arbitrary number."

"You're my friend's daughter. You're living in my house. I'm supposed to protect you, not—"

"Not what?" She pressed her naked chest against me, and I felt my resolve crumbling. "Not touch me? Not make me feel alive for the first time in years? Not show me what desire really feels like?" She kissed my jaw, my throat, her hand finding the hardness straining against my trousers. "Because I can feel how much you want to. I can feel how hard you are for me."

I groaned, my head falling back. "Lily—"

"Let me," she whispered, and her hand worked my zipper. "Let me make you feel good. Let me be yours."

I should have stopped her. I didn't.

She freed my cock—thick, veined, already leaking at the tip—and stared at it with wide eyes. "You're big," she breathed. "Bigger than I imagined."

"Have you—"

"Only seen pictures. Videos." She wrapped her hand around me, her touch tentative, experimental. "Tell me what to do."

I guided her, showing her how to grip me, how to stroke, where I was most sensitive. She was an eager student, her eyes fixed on my face, watching for my reactions. When she leaned down and licked the bead of pre-cum from my tip, I nearly came off the sofa.

"Good?"

"Very good." My voice was strangled. "You don't have to—"

"I want to." And she took me into her mouth.

She was inexperienced, her teeth grazing me occasionally, her rhythm uncertain. But the sight of her—my friend's daughter, this beautiful young woman who'd haunted my dreams—on her knees with my cock in her mouth was too much. I tangled my hands in her hair and guided her, showing her how to take me deeper, how to use her tongue, when to suck harder.

"That's it," I groaned. "Just like that. God, Lily—you're perfect."

She moaned around me, the vibration sending sparks up my spine. Her hand worked the base of my shaft while her mouth took what she could, her eyes watering slightly as she tried to take me deeper.

"I'm going to come," I warned. "Lily, I'm—"

She didn't pull away. She sucked harder, her hand pumping faster, and I exploded with a shout that probably carried to the neighbors. She choked slightly, then recovered, swallowing around me, her throat working as she took everything I gave her.

When I finally stopped twitching, she sat back, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. Her lips were swollen, her eyes bright.

"Was that—did I do it right?"

I pulled her up and kissed her, tasting myself on her tongue. "That was perfect. You're perfect."

She smiled against my lips. "I want to do it again. I want to do everything with you."

I should have ended it there. Should have sent her away, maintained some boundary, some shred of the man I'd been.

Instead, I carried her to my bedroom and spent the rest of the afternoon teaching her exactly how perfect she could be.

Part Three: The Education

We established rules, of course. Or rather, I tried to.

"No one can know," I said, as we lay tangled in my sheets that first night. She was curled against my chest, her fingers tracing patterns through the graying hair there. "Your father would never forgive me. I'd lose my job. We'd be—"

"Ruined," she finished. "I know. I'm not stupid, Daniel. I know what this costs you." She propped herself up on one elbow, her breast pressing against my arm. "But I don't care. I've spent my whole life being good, being perfect, being the child prodigy who never caused trouble. I want this. I want you. Even if it's secret. Even if it's wrong."

"It's not wrong," I said, surprising myself. "It feels—god, Lily, it feels like the most right thing I've felt in years."

She smiled, that dimpled smile that made my heart ache. "Then teach me. Everything. I want to know what you like. What makes you crazy."

Over the next six weeks, I taught her.

I taught her how to ride me, her small body impaled on my cock, her breasts bouncing as she found her rhythm. I taught her how to use her mouth—how to take me deep, how to play with my balls, how to bring me to the edge and back again until I was begging for release.

I taught her about her own body—how to find her G-spot, how to have multiple orgasms, how to squirt when I fingered her just right. I taught her the pleasures of submission, of being tied to my bed while I teased her for hours, bringing her to the brink again and again until she was weeping with need.

And I taught her about pain and pleasure mixed—the sharp sting of my hand on her ass, the bite of my teeth on her shoulder, the exquisite torture of nipple clamps and ice cubes and delayed gratification.

"You're a natural," I told her one night, as she knelt before me with her hands tied behind her back, her mouth open and waiting. "A natural submissive. You were made to be worshipped. To be used. To be cherished."

"Only by you," she said, and I saw the love in her eyes—the dangerous, devastating love of a young woman for her first real lover.

I should have ended it then. Should have sent her away before we both drowned.

I didn't.

The night it all changed was in late July.

We'd developed a routine—days spent in polite distance, me working in my study, her at the library or in her room. Evenings of conversation and wine, the pretense of propriety. And nights—long, dark, sinful nights where I made her scream my name until her voice was hoarse.

But that night, she was different. Quieter. She'd spent the day with a friend from Berkeley who was visiting Cambridge, and she'd come home with shadows in her eyes.

"What is it?" I asked, as we sat on the back porch watching the fireflies emerge.

She was silent for a long time. Then: "My friend asked me if I was seeing anyone. If I'd met any cute grad students."

I felt a cold knot in my stomach. "What did you tell her?"

"That I was involved with someone. That it was complicated." She turned to me, and her eyes were wet. "She asked if he was married. I said no. She asked if he was older. I said yes. She asked how much older, and I—I couldn't answer."

"Lily—"

"She guessed forty. Fifty. She said it was disgusting. That I was being taken advantage of. That you were using me." A tear spilled over. "I wanted to tell her that I'm using you. That I've pursued you since I was sixteen. That I'm the one who seduced you. But I couldn't. Because she's right, isn't she? In a way. You have all the power. The house, the money, the experience. I'm just—I'm just a girl who got lucky."

I stood up and pulled her into my arms. "You're not just anything. You're the most remarkable person I've ever known. And yes, I'm older. Yes, I have power that I try never to use against you. But Lily—" I tilted her face up to mine. "You have all the power over me. I can't eat without thinking of you. I can't sleep without dreaming of you. I've built my entire life around control, around restraint, and you—" I kissed her, hard. "You destroy all of it with a look."

She kissed me back, desperate, her hands pulling at my clothes. "Make love to me," she begged. "Not fucking. Not teaching. Just—make love to me. Like I'm the only woman you've ever wanted."

I carried her inside and laid her on my bed. I undressed her slowly, kissing every inch of skin I revealed. I worshipped her with my mouth—her breasts, her belly, the inside of her thighs, the wet heat of her sex. I brought her to the edge with my tongue, then backed off, again and again, until she was begging.

"Please, Daniel. Please. I need you inside me."

I positioned myself above her, looking down at her flushed face, her wild hair, her eyes dark with desire and something else—something that looked like love.

"I love you," she whispered. "I know I shouldn't. I know it's too soon. But I love you, Daniel. I've loved you for years."

I should have stopped. Should have explained that love between us was impossible, that it could only lead to pain.

Instead, I slid into her slowly, filling her completely, and whispered: "I love you too."

We made love that night—slow, deep, endless. I moved inside her with a rhythm that was almost prayer, our eyes locked, our hands intertwined. She came twice, her body clamping around me, her cries soft and broken. And when I finally released, it was with her name on my lips and the devastating knowledge that I would never recover from this.

Afterward, she fell asleep in my arms, her head on my chest. I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, knowing that I had crossed a line from which there was no return.

I was in love with Lily Chen. And it was going to destroy us both.

Part Four: The Fall

August arrived with humid days and the sense of impending doom.

We were careful—excruciatingly careful. No public displays of affection. Separate bedrooms in case David called. Lily's friend from Berkeley had left with suspicions but no proof. We maintained the fiction of the benevolent professor and his friend's daughter, even as we spent every night tangled in each other's bodies.

But the cracks were showing.

Lily wanted more. She wanted to go out with me—to restaurants, to movies, to walk holding my hand along the Charles River. She wanted to meet my colleagues, to be introduced as my girlfriend, to exist in the daylight.

"We can't," I told her, again and again. "Not yet. Not until you're established in your program, until the power imbalance is less—"

"Less what?" she demanded one night, tears streaming down her face. "Less scandalous? Less illegal? I'm twenty-two, Daniel. I'm an adult. I can love whoever I want."

"And I can lose my job. My reputation. My relationship with your father." I held her, hating myself. "I'm asking you to be patient. To wait."

"For how long?"

I didn't have an answer.

The end came suddenly, as these things do.

David called on a Sunday afternoon. Lily was in my bed, naked, her head on my thigh as she read a book. I answered the phone on speaker, thinking it was a casual check-in.

"Daniel, I need to ask you something." David's voice was strange—tight, controlled. "And I need you to be honest with me."

I felt Lily go still against me. "Of course."

"Have you been sleeping with my daughter?"

The world stopped. I looked at Lily, and she was pale, her eyes wide.

"David—"

"Because I found her journal. She left it at the house when she visited last month. And I read—" His voice broke. "I read everything, Daniel. Every disgusting detail. The things you did to her. The things you made her do."

"David, it's not—"

"Not what? Not what it looks like? She's nineteen, Daniel. She's a child. And you're—" He made a sound like a wounded animal. "You're supposed to be my friend. You're supposed to be protecting her."

"She's twenty-two," I said, my voice hollow. "And I love her."

The silence on the other end was devastating.

"Pack her things," David said finally. "I'm flying out tomorrow. I'm taking her home."

"David, please—"

"If you fight me on this, I'll go to the administration. I'll tell them everything. You'll never teach again." He hung up.

Lily was crying silently, her face buried in my lap. I stroked her hair, numb.

"I'll talk to him," she whispered. "I'll explain—"

"No." My voice was flat. "He's right. I've taken advantage of you. I've—"

"Don't you dare." She sat up, her eyes blazing through her tears. "Don't you dare make this ugly. What we have—what we had—it's beautiful. It's real. Don't let him turn it into something sordid."

"He's your father, Lily. And he's right about the power imbalance. About my position. About—" I stood up, pulling on my robe. "You need to go with him. You need to finish your degree, build your life, find someone—"

"Don't say it." She was shaking. "Don't you dare say I should find someone my own age."

"—who can love you openly," I finished. "Who can marry you, have children with you, grow old with you. I can't give you those things, Lily. I'm twenty-four years older than you. In twenty years, I'll be sixty-six. You'll be in your prime. In thirty years—"

"I don't care," she sobbed. "I don't care about any of that. I just want you."

I held her while she cried. I packed her things while she watched, silent now, her face streaked with tears. And when David arrived the next morning, his face a mask of fury and betrayal, I helped him load her bags into the car without a word of protest.

Lily didn't look at me as they drove away. She stared straight ahead, her face pale and set, her hands clenched in her lap.

I watched until the car was out of sight. Then I went inside and poured two fingers of scotch.

I didn't stop at two.

Part Five: The Reunion

Three years.

Three years of drowning in work, of publishing papers I didn't care about, of avoiding social situations where someone might ask about my love life. Three years of therapy, of trying to date women my own age, of failing because none of them were Lily.

Three years of emails I didn't send, letters I wrote and burned, phone numbers I almost called.

And then her email arrived.

I read it seventeen times. I poured scotch I didn't drink. I paced my study—the same study where I'd first touched her, where I'd ruined everything—until the floorboards creaked.

Then I wrote back.

Lily,

I never stopped thinking about you. Not for a single day. I tried to convince myself that letting you go was the right thing—the noble thing—but I've been dead since you left. A ghost haunting my own life.

I don't care about the scandal anymore. I don't care about my job, my reputation, my so-called integrity. I care about you. About the life we could have had. The life I was too afraid to reach for.

I'll be at the place. One week. And Lily—

I love you. I never stopped.

—Daniel

She arrived on a Thursday, not a week later but three days, as if she couldn't wait either.

I was in the study when I heard the door. I ran—actually ran—to open it, and there she was, more beautiful than I remembered, her amber eyes bright with tears, her hair longer, her body fuller, more womanly.

"You're here," I said, stupidly.

"I couldn't wait." She stepped inside, and I smelled the jasmine, the vanilla, the scent of her that had haunted my dreams. "Three years, Daniel. Three years of wondering if I imagined how good it was. How right it felt."

I pulled her into my arms and kissed her. She melted against me, her mouth opening, her hands tangling in my hair. Three years of celibacy—of self-imposed starvation—ended in that kiss.

"I love you," she whispered against my lips. "I never stopped. I dated other men, tried to forget you, but—"

"Neither did I," I admitted. "No one compared. No one ever could."

I carried her to my bedroom—our bedroom now, I'd prepared it for her, filled it with flowers and books and the promise of forever. I undressed her slowly, reverently, rediscovering every inch of the body I'd memorized in those six perfect weeks.

She was different now—more confident, more demanding. She knew what she wanted, and she told me.

"I want you inside me," she commanded, pushing me back on the bed and climbing on top. "No more waiting. No more being careful."

She sank onto me slowly, her eyes rolling back, her mouth falling open. She was tighter than I remembered, or maybe I was just desperate, but the feel of her—hot, wet, perfect—was almost enough to make me come immediately.

"Look at me," she ordered, her hands on my chest. "Look at me while I fuck you."

I looked. I watched her ride me, her small breasts bouncing, her nipples hard and dark, her face flushed with pleasure and power. She was magnificent. She was mine.

"Touch yourself," I told her. "I want to watch you come on my cock."

She did, her fingers finding her clit, rubbing in tight circles as she ground down on me. Her movements became frantic, her breath coming in gasps, and then she was coming, her body convulsing, her internal muscles clamping down on me in rhythmic spasms.

"Daniel—oh god—Daniel—"

I couldn't hold back anymore. I flipped her onto her back and drove into her, hard and deep, claiming her with every thrust. She wrapped her legs around me, her nails digging into my back, urging me on.

"Yes—yes—harder—don't stop—"

I came with a shout that was almost a sob, my release pouring into her, my body shaking with the force of it. I collapsed on top of her, then rolled to the side, pulling her with me, keeping us joined.

We lay like that for a long time, tangled together, our hearts slowing in unison.

"I want to stay," she whispered. "Not just for tonight. Forever."

"Then stay." I kissed her forehead, her eyelids, her mouth. "Marry me. Be my wife. I don't care what anyone says. I don't care about the scandal. I just want you."

She pulled back, her eyes wide. "Are you serious?"

"I've never been more serious about anything in my life." I took her hand, pressed it to my heart. "Lily Chen, will you marry me? Will you let me love you for the rest of my days?"

She laughed, then cried, then kissed me. "Yes," she said. "Yes, yes, yes."

Epilogue: The Wedding

We were married in a small ceremony in Vermont, on the autumn equinox. David refused to attend, but Lily's mother came—surprising us both—and gave her blessing with tears in her eyes.

"She's happy," her mother told me, as we watched Lily dance with a friend from her graduate program. "For the first time in years, she's truly happy. How can I be angry about that?"

I left my position at Harvard—voluntarily, before the scandal could force me out—and took a position at a small liberal arts college in Maine. Lily finished her PhD and joined the faculty. We bought a house by the ocean, with a study that looked out over the water.

Some nights, when the wind is right and the moon is full, I carry her to that study and lay her on the sofa where it all began. I make love to her slowly, worshipfully, showing her again and again how much I cherish her.

"You're my world," I tell her, as she comes apart beneath me. "My heart. My everything."

"And you're mine," she whispers back. "My professor. My lover. My husband."

We are each other's secret, still—though now the secret is simply how deep love can run, how completely two people can belong to each other. We are the scandal that became a romance. The taboo that became a blessing.

And every night, when I fall asleep with her in my arms, I thank whatever gods may be for the email that brought her back to me. For the second chance I didn't deserve.

For Lily.

For love.
