The Widow Next Door

When his air conditioning failed, he sought shelter with the widow next door. He never expected her cool apartment to get this steamy.

The air conditioning unit in Marcus's apartment had been rattling for three days straight, a desperate mechanical wheezing that finally surrendered on the fourth morning of the record-breaking heat wave. The thermometer on his balcony read ninety-seven degrees at 8 AM, and the humidity wrapped around his body like a wet blanket the moment he stepped outside to assess the situation.

"Fucking perfect," he muttered, wiping sweat from his forehead. At thirty-two, Marcus had endured plenty of Chicago summers, but this July was proving to be merciless. His apartment was now an oven, and working from home had become impossible.

He needed a sanctuary, and there was only one option.

Marcus grabbed his laptop bag and headed downstairs, crossing the courtyard of the vintage brick apartment complex toward the building next door. Mrs. Eleanor Vance—though she insisted everyone call her Ellie—lived in the corner unit on the ground floor, a spacious two-bedroom that still had the original 1920s architecture and, more importantly, central air conditioning that actually worked.

Ellie was his neighbor of three years, a widow in her late forties who kept to herself but had always been friendly in the elevator. She'd mentioned once, during a chance encounter at the mailboxes, that she worked from home as a freelance editor and that her door was always open if he ever needed anything.

He'd never taken her up on that offer. Not until now.

Marcus knocked on her door, already feeling the sweat pooling at the small of his back. He was wearing gym shorts and a thin white t-shirt that was already sticking to his chest, and he suddenly felt self-conscious about how underdressed he was.

The door opened, and there was Ellie, looking impossibly cool and composed in a sleeveless summer dress that fell to mid-thigh. Her auburn hair was pulled back in a loose bun, and reading glasses perched on her nose. She was barefoot, her toenails painted a dark red that caught his attention for reasons he couldn't immediately explain.

"Marcus," she said, her voice warm and surprised. "Are you melting out there?"

"Completely," he admitted, offering a sheepish smile. "My AC finally died, and I was wondering—hoping, really—if I could impose on you for a few hours. Just until I can get a repairman out here."

Ellie stepped back immediately, gesturing him inside. "Of course, come in. It's absolutely brutal out there. I've been watching the news—they're saying it's the hottest week in fifteen years."

The blast of cool air hit him like a physical force, and Marcus practically groaned with relief as he stepped into her apartment. The interior was tastefully decorated with vintage furniture and bookshelves lining every wall. The living room opened into a dining area with a large oak table that served as her workspace, papers and manuscripts stacked in neat piles.

"Thank you so much," Marcus said, setting his bag down. "I can work from anywhere with WiFi, and I just couldn't take another minute in that sauna."

"Make yourself at home," Ellie said, closing the door behind him. "Can I get you something cold to drink? I made lemonade this morning, or I have beer if you prefer."

"Lemonade sounds amazing," Marcus said, following her into the kitchen.

He tried not to stare as she moved, but it was difficult. Ellie had one of those bodies that seemed to improve with age—full hips that swayed when she walked, breasts that were heavy and natural beneath the cotton fabric of her dress, and legs that were toned from what he knew were daily morning walks. She wasn't the stick-thin type that dominated social media; she was a real woman with curves and softness and a confidence that came from no longer caring about the male gaze.

At least, that's what he'd always assumed. Now, watching her reach up to grab glasses from a cabinet, her dress riding up slightly to reveal the backs of her thighs, Marcus realized he was very much giving her the male gaze.

She caught him looking as she turned around, a knowing smile playing at her lips. "See something interesting?"

Marcus felt his face flush. "Sorry, I was just—your apartment is really nice. I love the built-in bookshelves."

"Mm-hmm," Ellie said, pouring the lemonade. She handed him a glass, her fingers brushing his, cool and soft. "You don't have to apologize for looking, Marcus. It's flattering, actually. Most men your age don't notice women my age."

"That's their loss," Marcus said, taking a long drink. The lemonade was tart and sweet and ice-cold, and he felt his body temperature finally beginning to regulate.

Ellie leaned against the counter, studying him over the rim of her glass. "So what do you do, exactly? I know you mentioned something about marketing when we first met, but I never got the details."

"Digital marketing strategy," Marcus explained. "I help small businesses optimize their online presence. SEO, content marketing, social media management. It's mostly remote work, which is great, except when your apartment feels like the surface of the sun."

"SEO," Ellie said, nodding. "Search engine optimization. I edit a lot of articles about that. Keywords, long-tail phrases, organic traffic. It's fascinating how much psychology goes into it."

"You know about SEO?" Marcus asked, surprised.

"I know about a lot of things," Ellie said, her tone suggestive in a way that made his pulse quicken. "I'm a curious person. I like to learn. Experience new things."

The way she said "experience" sent a shiver down Marcus's spine despite the cool air. There was something in her eyes—a hunger, a loneliness, a desire that had been dormant and was now awakening.

"Well," Marcus said, clearing his throat, "I should probably get to work. I have a deadline for a client proposal."

"Of course," Ellie said, pushing off the counter. "You can set up at the dining table. I'll be in my bedroom office, so you'll have the space to yourself."

She led him back to the dining area, and Marcus unpacked his laptop, settling into the wooden chair that creaked comfortably beneath his weight. Ellie disappeared down the hallway, and he tried to focus on his work, pulling up spreadsheets and analytics reports.

But his mind kept drifting to the woman in the other room. He could hear her occasionally—the shuffle of papers, the creak of floorboards, the soft hum of her voice as she read something aloud to herself. It was distracting in the best way, a domestic intimacy that felt more arousing than any pornography.

By noon, Marcus had made significant progress on his proposal, but he was also acutely aware of how long he'd been in her apartment. He stood up to stretch, walking to the window that overlooked the courtyard. His own building stood opposite, and he could see his dark windows, the heat radiating off the brick in visible waves.

"How's it going?"

He turned to find Ellie standing in the hallway, her reading glasses gone, her hair now loose around her shoulders. She'd changed into something even more revealing—a silk camisole and matching shorts that looked like sleepwear, pale blue and shimmering in the afternoon light.

"Good," Marcus managed, his throat suddenly dry despite the lemonade. "I should probably check on my AC repair. See if anyone's coming today."

Ellie walked toward him, her movements slow and deliberate. "I already called for you. The super said the earliest they can get to you is tomorrow morning. Something about being backed up with half the building's units failing."

Marcus's heart sank. "Tomorrow? I can't spend another night in that heat."

"You're welcome to stay here," Ellie said, stopping close enough that he could smell her perfume—something floral and musky that suited her perfectly. "I have a guest room. Or the couch, if you prefer. But you should know, Marcus, that I don't want you to sleep on the couch."

The air between them seemed to thicken, charged with electricity that had nothing to do with the storm building outside. Marcus looked down at her, at the way her camisole clung to her breasts, her nipples visible and hard beneath the silk.

"Ellie," he said, his voice rough. "What are you saying?"

She reached up, her hand resting on his chest, fingers spreading over his heartbeat. "I'm saying that I've been alone for three years since my husband died. I'm saying that I watch you sometimes, when you don't know I'm looking. I'm saying that I want you to stay, and I want you to stay in my bed."

Marcus covered her hand with his own, feeling the heat of her palm through his thin shirt. "You're sure?"

Instead of answering, Ellie rose on her toes and kissed him.

Her mouth was soft and tasted of mint and lemons, and Marcus groaned as he pulled her against him, his hands finding the curve of her waist, the swell of her hips. She kissed like a woman who knew exactly what she wanted—confident, demanding, her tongue sliding against his with practiced skill.

"Bedroom," she whispered against his lips. "Now."

She took his hand and led him down the hallway, past the guest room to her master bedroom, a spacious sanctuary with heavy curtains blocking the afternoon sun and a king-sized bed with white linens that looked impossibly soft. The air conditioning vent blew cool air directly onto the bed, creating a pocket of perfect temperature.

Ellie turned to face him, reaching for the hem of her camisole and pulling it over her head in one smooth motion. Her breasts fell free, heavy and beautiful with rose-colored nipples that tightened in the cool air. She wasn't wearing a bra, and Marcus found himself staring, transfixed by the natural beauty of her mature body.

"Touch me," she commanded, taking his hand and guiding it to her breast.

Her flesh was warm and soft, filling his palm perfectly. Marcus squeezed gently, watching her face for reaction, and was rewarded with a soft gasp as her eyes fluttered closed. He used his other hand to cup her other breast, thumbing her nipple until she moaned, her head falling back to expose her throat.

"Your mouth," she breathed. "I want your mouth on me."

Marcus didn't need to be told twice. He bent his head, capturing one nipple between his lips, sucking gently at first, then harder as her fingers tangled in his hair, holding him close. He used his tongue to circle the sensitive flesh, feeling it harden against his tongue, then switched to the other breast, giving it equal attention.

"God, yes," Ellie moaned, arching into him. "Just like that. Don't stop."

He had no intention of stopping. Marcus had always loved foreplay, loved the build-up and the teasing, and he took his time with Ellie, learning what she liked, what made her gasp, what made her grip his hair tighter. He kissed down her sternum, to the soft swell of her stomach, his hands sliding down to hook into the waistband of her silk shorts.

"Off," he murmured against her skin. "These need to come off."

Ellie stepped back, her eyes dark with desire as she pushed the shorts down her hips, letting them pool at her feet. She was naked now, completely vulnerable and stunningly confident. Marcus took a moment to appreciate the view—the curve of her hips, the thatch of auburn hair between her thighs, the way she stood with her legs slightly apart, inviting him to look, to touch, to taste.

"Your turn," she said, her voice husky.

Marcus pulled his shirt over his head, then pushed his shorts and underwear down together, his cock springing free, already hard and aching. He heard Ellie's sharp intake of breath as she looked at him, her gaze fixed on his erection.

"Beautiful," she whispered, reaching out to wrap her hand around his length. "So thick. I knew you'd be perfect."

Her hand was warm and soft, moving slowly up and down his shaft, her thumb circling the sensitive head, spreading the bead of pre-cum that had already formed. Marcus groaned, his hips bucking involuntarily into her touch.

"Easy," she soothed, stroking him slowly, deliberately. "We have all afternoon. All night. I want to take my time with you, Marcus. I want to feel every inch of you."

She guided him to the bed, pushing him gently until he sat on the edge, then kneeling between his legs. The sight of her there, naked and submissive, her mouth level with his cock, was almost enough to make him come right then.

"I've been thinking about this," Ellie admitted, looking up at him through her lashes. "About having you in my mouth. About tasting you."

She leaned forward, her tongue darting out to lick the underside of his shaft, from base to tip, swirling around the head before taking him into her mouth.

The heat and wet suction of her mouth was overwhelming. Marcus fell back on his elbows, watching her work, her head bobbing slowly as she took more of him with each descent. She wasn't rushing, wasn't trying to prove anything—she was simply enjoying him, using her tongue and lips and the occasional scrape of her teeth to drive him wild.

"Fuck, Ellie," he groaned, his hand finding her hair, not to guide but to touch, to connect. "That feels incredible."

She hummed around him, the vibration sending sparks up his spine, and he felt his balls tighten, the familiar pressure building. But he didn't want to finish like this, not yet, not when he hadn't tasted her yet.

"Wait," he gasped, gently pulling her away. "I need to touch you. Taste you."

Ellie released him with a wet pop, her lips swollen and glistening. "You want to taste my pussy?"

"God, yes," Marcus said, his voice rough with desire.

She crawled up onto the bed, lying back against the pillows, her legs falling open to reveal herself to him. Marcus positioned himself between her thighs, spreading her wider with his hands, marveling at the sight of her—pink and wet and ready, her clit already swollen and peeking from beneath its hood.

"You're so wet," he murmured, running a finger through her folds, gathering her arousal.

"For you," she breathed. "All for you."

Marcus lowered his head, inhaling her scent—musky and sweet and entirely feminine—before pressing his tongue flat against her slit, dragging upward to circle her clit.

Ellie cried out, her hips lifting off the bed, her hands gripping the sheets. "Yes! Oh god, right there!"

He settled into a rhythm, using his tongue to tease her clit while his fingers explored her entrance, sliding one digit inside her tight heat, then two, curling them to find the rough patch of her G-spot. Ellie was vocal, unashamed in her pleasure, telling him exactly what she wanted, how she wanted it, her voice growing louder and more desperate with each passing minute.

"Don't stop," she begged, her hips bucking against his face. "I'm close. Please don't stop."

Marcus doubled his efforts, sucking her clit between his lips while pumping his fingers in and out of her, feeling her walls begin to flutter around him. He wanted to feel her come, wanted to taste her orgasm, wanted to push her over the edge and watch her fall apart.

"Marcus!" she screamed, her body going rigid, her thighs clamping around his head as she came hard, her inner muscles spasming around his fingers, her arousal flooding his chin.

He kept licking her through it, gentling his touch as she came down, her body trembling with aftershocks. When he finally lifted his head, she was looking at him with something like wonder, her chest heaving, her skin flushed pink.

"Come here," she whispered, reaching for him. "I need you inside me. Now."

Marcus crawled up her body, kissing her deeply, letting her taste herself on his lips. He positioned himself at her entrance, the head of his cock pressing against her wet heat.

"Condom?" he asked, though it nearly killed him to stop.

"I'm on the pill," Ellie said, wrapping her legs around his waist. "And I'm clean. I want to feel you bare. I want you to fill me up."

The thought of coming inside her, of marking her, of claiming her in the most primal way, was too much to resist. Marcus thrust forward, sinking into her tight, wet heat in one long stroke.

They both moaned in unison, the sensation of skin on skin overwhelming in its intensity. Ellie was hot and slick around him, her walls gripping him like a velvet fist, and Marcus had to pause, buried to the hilt, to catch his breath.

"Move," she urged, her nails digging into his back. "Please, Marcus. Fuck me."

He pulled back slowly, almost all the way out, then slammed back in, setting a hard, fast pace that had the bed creaking beneath them. Ellie met him thrust for thrust, her hips rising to meet his, her breasts bouncing with the force of their movements.

"Harder," she demanded. "Fuck me harder. I want to feel you for days."

Marcus obliged, gripping her hips and pounding into her, the sound of their bodies slapping together filling the room, mixing with their moans and gasps. He shifted his angle slightly, and Ellie cried out, her eyes going wide.

"There! Right there! Oh god, don't stop!"

He kept hitting that spot, watching her face contort with pleasure, feeling her tighten around him as another orgasm built. He was close too, his balls drawing up, his thrusts becoming erratic as he chased his release.

"Come with me," he gritted out. "Ellie, come with me."

"Yes," she gasped, her body tensing. "Yes, Marcus, I'm coming—"

She shattered beneath him, her orgasm ripping through her, her inner walls milking his cock in rhythmic contractions that pushed him over the edge. Marcus buried himself deep and let go, coming hard, pulse after pulse of hot seed flooding her waiting pussy, marking her as his.

He collapsed on top of her, both of them panting, their bodies slick with sweat despite the air conditioning. Ellie wrapped her arms around him, holding him close, and he could feel her heartbeat hammering against his chest.

"Stay," she whispered against his neck. "Don't go back to your apartment. Stay here with me."

Marcus lifted his head, looking down at her flushed, satisfied face. "I thought you'd never ask."

They spent the rest of the afternoon in bed, dozing and talking and touching, exploring each other's bodies with the lazy intimacy of new lovers. Marcus learned that Ellie liked to be touched softly after she came, that her neck was incredibly sensitive, that she made the most adorable noises when he kissed behind her knees.

He also learned that she was insatiable.

As the sun began to set, painting the room in shades of gold and orange, Ellie rolled toward him, her hand finding his cock, which stirred to life beneath her touch despite having already come twice.

"Again?" Marcus asked, amused and aroused.

"I told you," Ellie said, straddling his hips, positioning herself above him. "I have three years to make up for. And I've been fantasizing about this—about riding you, about controlling the pace, about making you watch me take my pleasure."

She sank down onto him slowly, inch by inch, her eyes locked on his, her mouth falling open in a silent gasp as she took him fully. Marcus gripped her hips, watching her breasts sway as she began to move, rolling her hips in a figure-eight motion that had him seeing stars.

"Touch yourself," he commanded, his voice rough. "I want to watch you make yourself come while I'm inside you."

Ellie smiled, a wicked, sensual expression, and brought her hand between her legs, her fingers finding her clit as she continued to ride him. The sight of her pleasuring herself while he filled her was the most erotic thing Marcus had ever seen, and he felt his arousal building rapidly.

"That's it," he encouraged, thrusting up to meet her downward movements. "Show me how you like it. Show me what makes you come."

She was beautiful in her abandon, her head thrown back, her hair cascading down her back, her fingers working furiously between her legs. Marcus reached up to pinch her nipples, rolling them between his fingers, and Ellie cried out, her movements becoming frantic.

"Marcus, I'm going to—oh god—"

She came with a scream, her body convulsing, her pussy clamping down on him so hard he couldn't hold back. He grabbed her hips and thrust up into her, coming deep inside her for the second time, his vision going white at the edges.

Ellie collapsed forward, her sweat-slicked breasts pressed against his chest, and they lay there, panting and trembling, as the room grew dark around them.

"Shower," Ellie finally murmured against his neck. "Then food. Then more of this."

"More?" Marcus laughed, though his cock twitched hopefully inside her. "You're going to kill me."

"What a way to go," Ellie said, lifting her head to kiss him softly. "But first, let me show you the shower. It's big enough for two."

The shower was indeed spacious, with multiple showerheads and excellent water pressure. Marcus stood behind Ellie, washing her hair, his fingers massaging her scalp until she was practically purring. His cock, ever hopeful, was pressed against the cleft of her ass, and he couldn't resist grinding against her as he rinsed the shampoo from her hair.

"Again?" Ellie asked, looking over her shoulder with a raised eyebrow, though she was already pushing back against him.

"Can't help it," Marcus admitted, his hands sliding around to cup her breasts, slick and warm from the steam. "You do something to me, Ellie. I can't get enough."

She reached back, guiding him to her entrance, and he slid into her from behind, the water cascading over them as he began to move. This position was different—deeper, tighter—and Ellie braced herself against the tile wall, pushing back to meet his thrusts.

"Fuck me slow," she requested, her voice breathy. "Make it last."

Marcus obliged, setting a languid pace that was more about connection than release. He kissed her neck, her shoulders, his hands roaming over her wet skin, memorizing every curve. The steam surrounded them, the water drumming against their bodies, and it felt like they were in their own private world.

"I've wanted this for so long," Ellie admitted, her voice soft. "Since you moved in. I used to watch you from my window, see you coming home from the gym, and I'd touch myself thinking about you."

The confession sent a spike of arousal through Marcus, and he picked up his pace slightly. "You thought about me? While you touched yourself?"

"Every night," she gasped, pushing back harder. "I'd imagine you like this, inside me, fucking me senseless."

"And now?" Marcus asked, his voice strained. "Is it everything you imagined?"

"Better," Ellie moaned. "So much better. Harder, Marcus. Please."

He gave her what she wanted, pounding into her from behind, the sound of their bodies meeting echoing off the tile. Ellie's hand snaked between her legs, rubbing her clit in tight circles, and she came with a cry that was muffled by the sound of the shower, her body shaking against his.

Marcus followed moments later, pulling out just in time to spend himself across her lower back, marking her with his release. They stayed like that for a moment, catching their breath, before Ellie turned in his arms and kissed him deeply, the water washing away the evidence of their passion.

"Food," she said when they finally broke apart. "I need to keep your strength up."

They ordered Thai food and ate it naked in bed, feeding each other bites of pad thai and spring rolls, drinking wine that Ellie had chilled to perfection. They talked about everything and nothing—her work as an editor, his marketing clients, their shared love of old movies and jazz music.

As they finished eating, Ellie set the containers aside and curled up against Marcus's side, her head on his chest, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his stomach.

"Tell me something," she said softly. "What do you want? Not just tonight, but... after?"

Marcus was quiet for a moment, considering. "I want this," he finally said. "Whatever this is. I want to keep seeing you, Ellie. I want to learn everything about you. I want to be the one who checks on you when you need something, and I want you to be the one I come home to."

Ellie lifted her head, her eyes searching his face. "You're serious?"

"I've never been more serious about anything," Marcus said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I know there's an age difference, and I know we live in the same building which could get complicated, but... I want to try. If you do."

Ellie smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that made her look years younger. "I do," she said. "I really do."

They made love again that night, slow and sweet, face to face, whispering promises and confessions in the dark. Marcus learned the shape of her body with his hands and mouth, brought her to the edge with his tongue until she was begging for release, then slid into her warmth and took them both over the edge together.

They fell asleep tangled in each other's arms, the air conditioning humming softly, the heat wave finally breaking outside with a thunderstorm that rattled the windows and soaked the city clean.

Marcus woke to the sound of his phone ringing, sunlight streaming through the curtains. He reached for it blindly, finding it on the nightstand, and squinted at the screen. It was the AC repair company.

"Hello?" he croaked, his voice rough from sleep and use.

"Mr. Williams? This is Chicago Heating and Cooling. We've got a technician available to look at your unit this morning. Can you be home in an hour?"

Marcus looked at Ellie, who was awake and watching him, her expression carefully neutral. He knew what she was thinking—that he would leave now that his apartment would be habitable again.

"Actually," Marcus said into the phone, "can you reschedule for tomorrow? I'm... I'm staying with a friend, and I'd like to be there when you come."

There was a pause on the other end. "Tomorrow morning, then. Same time?"

"Perfect. Thank you."

He hung up and set the phone aside, turning to face Ellie, who was now smiling.

"Tomorrow?" she asked, her voice hopeful.

"Tomorrow," Marcus confirmed, pulling her into his arms. "And the day after that. And the day after that. If you'll have me."

Ellie kissed him, soft and sweet. "I think I can manage that."

They spent the morning in bed, exploring each other again, Marcus learning that Ellie was particularly sensitive first thing in the morning, her body responsive and eager. He took his time with her, bringing her to the edge with his fingers, then his mouth, then finally sliding into her as the sun climbed higher in the sky.

They moved together slowly, unhurried, savoring every sensation. Marcus watched her face as she came, memorizing the way her eyes fluttered closed, the way her mouth opened in a silent cry, the way her body tightened around him and pulled him over the edge with her.

Afterward, they showered together again, dressed, and walked to a nearby café for brunch, holding hands like teenagers, stealing kisses over their coffee. The storm had broken the heat wave, and the air was fresh and cool, the city sparkling in the morning light.

As they walked back to the apartment complex, Marcus's phone buzzed with a text from his landlord: "AC unit replaced. Working perfectly. Sorry for the inconvenience."

He showed it to Ellie, who laughed. "Perfect timing."

"Actually," Marcus said, stopping in the courtyard and pulling her close, "I think the timing was exactly right."

He kissed her then, deeply and thoroughly, not caring who saw, not caring about the age difference or the neighborly complications or anything else. All that mattered was this woman, this moment, this unexpected love that had bloomed in the heat of a Chicago summer.

"Come on," Ellie said when they finally broke apart, her eyes shining. "Let's go check on your apartment. And then... I think I need you to check on me again. Make sure I'm doing okay."

Marcus grinned, taking her hand and leading her toward his building. "It would be my pleasure, Mrs. Vance. My absolute pleasure."

Epilogue: Three Months Later

The autumn leaves were turning gold and red, carpeting the courtyard in a riot of color. Marcus stood at the window of what was now their shared apartment—the spacious corner unit with the working AC and the king-sized bed and the bookshelves that held both of their collections.

He heard Ellie come up behind him, felt her arms wrap around his waist, her chin rest on his shoulder.

"Happy?" she asked.

Marcus turned in her arms, looking down at the woman who had become his world. "Beyond happy," he said, kissing her softly. "How could I not be? I have you."

Ellie smiled, that radiant smile that still made his heart skip. "And I have you. Which reminds me... I finished editing that manuscript you were working on. The one about digital marketing strategies for small businesses."

"And?"

"And it's brilliant," she said, her hands sliding down to cup his ass. "But I think you need a break from work. You've been at that computer for hours."

"Oh?" Marcus asked, his interest piqued, his body already responding to her touch. "And what did you have in mind?"

Ellie took his hand and led him toward the bedroom, her hips swaying in that way that still drove him wild. "I thought maybe we could... check on each other. Make sure everything is working properly. A thorough inspection, if you will."

Marcus laughed, following her eagerly. "I like the way you think, Mrs. Vance. I like it very much."

They fell onto the bed together, limbs tangling, clothes quickly discarded, their laughter turning to moans as they lost themselves in each other once again. Outside, the autumn wind blew leaves against the window, and the city bustled on, but in their little corner of the world, there was only heat and love and the endless, beautiful rhythm of two bodies moving as one.

Marcus had come to check on his neighbor during a heat wave, and instead, he'd found his home. And as he sank into Ellie's welcoming warmth, as she wrapped her legs around him and urged him deeper, he knew that he would spend the rest of his life checking on her, caring for her, loving her—through every season, through every storm, through every beautiful, ordinary day.

"Welcome home," Ellie whispered against his lips.

"Always," Marcus promised, and proceeded to show her exactly how thorough his inspection could be.
